PLUGIT, Peoples Leisure User Group - Information Technology, as it says in the name, is an organization who’s aim is, to help people understand the importance of Information Technology in today’s society; more to the point, to understand computers.
It was first formed in 1998, by a group of like minded individuals who realised there was no tuition, or help available for the older generation. There was no group, society or college to turn to (in the immediate vicinity) when help was needed. There was no one who could instill confidence or give basic training in the use of a computer, without doing examination courses (in some far off town), and all the various things that can be achieved with them, such as how to take advantage of the many different facets of computing.
This group of people worked very hard, to obtain a grant from "Help the Aged" to be able to start the organization we now know as "PLUGIT".
The grant was used to obtain a number of Pentium computers, which could be loaned out to members of PLUGIT at a very reasonable rental, so that they could become involved with modern day technology without the personal expense of doing so.
The organization has grown and flourished and has obtained further grants from "AWARDS FOR ALL" and is now in the privileged position to be able to loan out "Laptops" to members, so they are able to try them out, before buying their own.
The main aim of PLUGIT is to assist its members in the use of computers, so that they can enjoy the many avenues down which the hobby of computing will take them. "Plugit", can assist its members to become more competent, in the simple task of say, writing letters, sending e-mails and even using a video conference with friends and relatives far away, through to the more challenging aspects of movie creation and editing.
Meetings are held in a relaxed atmosphere where audience participation is encouraged, they are informal but at the same time constructive. Demonstrations are projected onto a 6ft sq screen so that visually impaired members don’t miss the finer points of the demonstration. Coffee or tea is available in the half time break to give members chance to absorb and discuss the early session.
PLUGIT is run by a committee of volunteers who give freely of their time to make sure it is as great a success for the members as it is possible to be. The Group meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month at the "Bacchus Hotel" in Sutton on Sea, at 10.30am until about 12.00 noon
